Jenny Diski was a fearless writer, for whom no subject was too difficult, even her own cancer diagnosis. Her columns in the London Review of Books – selected here by her editor and friend Mary-Kay Wilmers, on subjects as various as death, motherhood, sexual politics and the joys of solitude – have been described as 'virtuoso performances', and 'small masterpieces'.

She was awarded the 2003 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award for Stranger on a Train: Daydreaming and Smoking around America With Interruptions. Jenny Diski was born in 1947 in London, where she lived most of her life. She was the author of ten novels, four books of travel and memoir, including Stranger on a Train and Skating to Antarctica, two volumes of essays and a collection of short stories. Yet Diski was prolific. Jenny Diski, who died of cancer in 2016, just after the publication of her final book, “In Gratitude” (which was, in part, about dying), was ahead of her time.

Diski was educated at University College London, and worked as a teacher during the 1970s and early 1980s. Jenny Diski at the London Review Bookshop in 2010. She contributed more than 100 essays to The London Review of Books.

Recently, in a bar, I was reading “In Gratitude,” by the British writer Jenny Diski, (Most of the book first appeared as a series of columns in the London Review of Books.)

Jenny Diski was born in 1947 in London, where she has lived most of her life. I miss Jenny Diski. I started reading the London Review of Books in earnest when she started publishing her cancer diary there, from September 2014 onwards.
